Google updates spam policies to warn platforms hosting AI-generated shareable pages and tools

Google has updated its user-generated spam guidance to explicitly warn platforms offering tools that let users publish "shareable pages, generated outputs, or interactive tools" — which SEO expert Lily Ray reads as targeting AI products like Claude artifacts and ChatGPT pages that churn out indexable UGC at scale.
Per Search Engine Roundtable, Google also added an "Only index content meant for Search" section:
- Recommends noindex or crawl restrictions for pages meant only for sharing, collaboration, or utility rather than public discovery;
- Platforms must distinguish content intended for search discovery from content intended for direct access;
- Google says the changes help keep non-search user pages out of the index and detect spam earlier.
The update signals Google is dealing with AI-generated spam at a scale big enough to warrant documentation changes — and hints at future enforcement targets.
