TRL adds Score Centering, a simple fix for RLHF training instability
lvwerra · x · 2026-10-27
Hugging Face's TRL library now ships score centering as a stable feature. The underlying work notes that RL with LLMs is very unstable when the training and sampling policies differ; standard fixes (matching numerics, importance sampling) only work around the problem. The method finds the root cause from first principles and directly cancels it — competitive, compatible with existing approaches, and simple to implement.
