arXiv has 4,000+ papers on hold amid submission surge; moderator shares how to avoid it

arXiv moderator Thomas Dietterich confirmed the preprint server is straining under exponential submission growth, with more than 4,000 papers currently on hold — some far longer than 3 weeks — and apologized. Authors report waiting three weeks with no resolution while support says 'don't email us.' His first tip to avoid holds: choose the right primary category during submission, and if the classifier recommends a different primary, accept its recommendation — otherwise the paper will almost surely be put on hold.
