Chrome team explains WebMCP: agents get tools from your website, not a replacement for MCP

- Chromium Dev clarifies WebMCP is not replacing MCP. MCP connects agents to backend services: tools live on a server, use their own credentials, and are available as long as the server is up.
- WebMCP is a JavaScript API that lets a web page offer tools to agents: code runs in the page's JS runtime, only while the page is open, using the user's current session login, with the agent working on your own website UI.
- Tool discovery differs too: MCP servers are added by user/app, while WebMCP tools are registered dynamically by the page in the active session. Best for in-context web actions, client-side integrations, and web automation — complementary to MCP's background capabilities.
