NYU study: six patterns make AI text exhausting to read, traced to code and math training

A study from NYU and UT Austin finds that frontier LLMs systematically overuse six linguistic patterns that are hard for humans to parse — the reason AI-generated prose feels so exhausting.
The researchers trace the problem to training on code and math, where correctness is rewarded but clarity isn't. Notably, smaller models write more like humans.
