Anthropic: fold subagents back into your main agent loop as models get more capable
rseroter · x · 2026-10-27
Anthropic published an 18-minute guide, "Building agents: When to fold subagents into your main agent loop." Its Applied AI team found enterprise deployments benefiting from folding routers, planners, and domain subagents into the main loop in favor of progressively disclosed context and tools—improving quality while cutting cost and latency. Across several deployments, a single agent with skills often outperformed both one-prompt-for-everything and subagent designs. One company's dozen specialist subagents made on-brand consistency hard and added latency. Anthropic ships a migration kit to identify patterns, evaluate alternatives, and verify—tryable on a mock system. Subagents still shine for verification, parallel work, and modular permissioning.
