Shopify design lead on AI-era workflow: designers are becoming full-stack editors
KlausCodes · x · 2026-10-26
On YC's Design Review podcast, Marvin Schwaibold, who leads Shopify's product design studio (previously co-founder of studio Molly, working with Apple and Google), explains how AI has changed his design process: using Figma as a scratchpad and building working prototypes directly with tools like Codex. He argues designers are becoming more like editors and more full-stack, and that taste and judgment matter more than ever when tools can build almost anything. The episode ends with critiques of viewer-submitted websites on hierarchy, motion, typography and restraint.
