Anthropic delayed pre-training of a new frontier model for over a month over security concerns

Anthropic disclosed in an official document that it recently delayed pre-training of a new frontier base model for more than a month to further enhance security measures aimed at preventing model weight exfiltration and protecting its intellectual property.
The company said it plans to evaluate safety at each training stage — pre-training, post-training, and internal deployment — for models expected to have novel capabilities or safety risks, and may delay or pause a stage when confident safeguards aren't in place.
Anthropic also acknowledged no assurance that these safeguards or access regimes will prove adequate, that it will correctly identify which capabilities require restriction, or that constraints won't be circumvented.
