Sakana AI returns to the model layer: unveils pre-training project Sakana Sawara and three pillars
SakanaAILabs · x · 2026-10-26
At its Tokyo symposium, Sakana AI outlined three pillars for AI sovereignty: agent-assisted pre-training, Japanese/business post-training (Sakana Namazu), and model-agnostic orchestration (Sakana Fugu).
Chief scientist Tako Akihiro unveiled the pre-training project "Sakana Sawara" (tentative), arguing the model layer matters again as open models close the gap and RL enables task-specific training. Compute remains the bottleneck; a small elite team will use AI to sharpen experiment decisions.
