Grid, precision and filtering choices reshape what turbulence simulations look like
jo_brandstetter · x · 2026-10-26
In an educational thread on turbulence, researcher Joanna Brandstetter notes that turning a flow into a "numerical movie" involves key choices: grid resolution, arithmetic accuracy, how much fine detail is filtered, and how stored values are rounded. These choices materially change the flow's characteristics — and not in one consistent direction: a record can look convincing in space while its motion changes too quickly in time.
