Smart TVs are cheap because you're the product
A thread by FinanceYF5 on smart TV tracking: a teardown of a Samsung TV revealed an always-on microphone, ACR (Automatic Content Recognition), location tracking, network scanning, and ad profiling — with data shared with 400 partners.
Why vendors do it
- TV prices have fallen 97% since 2000; hardware margins are gone, so ads and data fill the gap.
- Vizio lost $6.7M selling TVs in Q3 2024 but made $115.8M gross profit from ads and viewing data.
- Vizio was fined $2.2M by the FTC for tracking 11M TVs without consent; Texas later sued Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, and TCL over ACR collection.
- An arXiv paper (2409.06203) audited Samsung/LG ACR: tracking works even when the TV is used as a dumb external display; opting out stops ACR traffic; behavior differs between the US and UK.
How to turn most of it off in 15 minutes
- Disable ACR per vendor: Samsung "Viewing Information Services", LG "Live Plus", Vizio "Viewing Data", Roku "Use info from TV inputs", Sony/Google TV "Samba Interactive TV" — plus personalized ads and voice recognition.
- Isolate devices: put TVs, cameras, speakers, and robot vacuums on a separate guest/IoT network.
- Block at network level: NextDNS (free tier) or self-hosted Pi-hole with the OISD blocklist, plus native tracker protection for Samsung/LG/Roku/Amazon.
Follow-up testing found Samsung may still perform some recognition even with ACR off, so network-level blocking is essential — don't trust the TV's toggle alone.
