Why Apple's folding iPhone shows black bars: apps built with older tools are deliberately boxed
aakashgupta · x · 2026-10-26
Responding to criticism that Apple's own App Store app isn't optimized for the $1,999 folding iPhone, the author explains the black bars are intentional. iOS checks the developer tools version each app was built with; apps built before the folding device get shrunk to a phone-sized box so nothing breaks, and only apps rebuilt with the newest tools (iOS 27.1 / Xcode 27.1) can fill the full inner screen — for most apps just a recompile.
