License gotchas when picking an open source OCR model for commercial use
TangeloOk9486 · reddit · 2026-10-26
A practical guide to the license column most OCR model comparisons skip. PyMuPDF is AGPL unless you buy a commercial license from Artifex; markers is Apache 2.0 for code but its weights use a modified openrail-m restricted to research, personal use, and startups under $5M; mineru ships a custom Apache-based license with extra conditions; glm-ocr is MIT but bundles an Apache-licensed layout model. paddleocr-vl, olmocr 2, docling and liteparse are permissive. Two sneakier traps: fine-tunes inherit their base model's terms (sizes in the same family can differ), and a repo saying Apache 2.0 doesn't mean the weights it downloads are.
