Anthropic built Scion to replace git as AI-driven merges jumped from 2,500 to 30,000/day

Anthropic details Scion, its in-house version control system built to handle AI-generated code at scale. Daily merges to its monorepo grew from 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September, making human-scale git the bottleneck. Key points:
- Coding is no longer the constraint; developer infrastructure built for humans is. Every removed bottleneck immediately increases output further.
- Scion prioritizes server-side processing and incremental updates: changeset metadata lives in Spanner, while file contents are stored immutably in cloud storage, compressed and deduplicated by hash; root trees are server-derived rather than stored in changesets.
- In five months Anthropic fully migrated its monorepo off git, and in the same period shipped a code review surface (Antique), code search, and a rich source-control IAM system.
- The case is a closed loop: Claude both caused the growth and helped build the scalable system to manage it.
