Perspective paper: Agentic memory management is the next frontier of information retrieval
_reachsumit · x · 2026-10-26
Qingyao Ai's arXiv perspective paper argues that agentic memory management (AMM)—the structure, organization, storage, retrieval and use of information inside an AI agent's memory—is a natural extension of IR research. The paper proposes a system-level framework for AMM, introduces a computational taxonomy of memory objects as constants, functions and operators with distinct retrieval semantics, compares AMM with established IR work, and outlines a research agenda covering benchmarks, memory-utility principles, and optimization mixing parametric and non-parametric updates.
