A not-yet-peer-reviewed NBER working paper, covered by Nature, analyzed abstracts from over 226,000 US STEM doctoral graduates submitted since 2019. It found roughly 30% of this year's STEM PhD dissertations contained AI-generated text.\n\nIt also found AI-assisted graduates were more likely to go into industry: those with AI-generated abstracts were 17% less likely to be employed in academia. The authors argue that how PhD students train and work with AI will shape science for decades.
