LabBuilder (ICML 2026): text-to-3D lab layouts that are chemically safe and robot-reachable

Researchers from Shanghai AI Lab, Wuhan University, Beihang, PKU, Tsinghua, SJTU and CUHK present LabBuilder (ICML 2026, arXiv 2605.02288), tackling a key bottleneck for automated labs: designing valid virtual experiment environments.
- Existing 3D scene generators are built for living rooms: they ignore chemical protocols, safety rules (flammables near heat sources), and robot reachability — plausible layouts fail in real use
- Given a free-text experiment description, LabBuilder generates end-to-end 3D lab layouts that are geometrically compliant, chemically safe, and robot-reachable
- It integrates an asset knowledge base (geometry, semantics, flammability/explosive/toxicity properties) and a chemical knowledge base (reaction protocols), with FastRepair and LLMAdjust fixing violations, plus navigation-feasibility refinement
- Compared to SceneWeaver and Holodeck, geometric violations drop from 2.60/11.00 to 0.24
A meaningful infrastructure step for robotic scientists and sim2real lab automation.
