Shigeru Miyamoto, awarded Japan's Order of Culture, on what generative AI means for creation
hardmaru · x · 2026-10-26
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto received Japan's prestigious Order of Culture (previously given to Kurosawa and Kawabata), placing games alongside film and literature. At the press conference he offered a rare working-creator take on generative AI.
He distinguishes creating from working: creation—composition, direction, deciding what should exist—is the hard part; work is execution, whose satisfaction can fool you into thinking you created something. Even before AI, tools always automated execution, he notes.
