AI workshop for 100+ lawyers: watching an associate acquire a 'founder's edge'
jkubicki · x · 2026-10-25
The author facilitated an AI working session for 100+ lawyers, mostly associates. One CRE associate visibly "got it"—realizing AI skills could help grow her practice—and asked during a break what else she could do with it.
The author's core argument: most lawyers don't lose their edge; they trade it for a path that is either temporary or the only one they ever considered, until their identity collapses into "a lawyer." But your law license and skills are assets you own. You can see your practice as a portfolio of opportunities to learn and grow—or as an endless conveyor belt of obligations, which the author links to the legal industry's worsening mental-health numbers.
The hope: not replacing the lawyer identity, but adding a second one—lawyer/builder. That's the "founder's edge."
