Standardizing people or customizing systems: AI's core moral dilemma
id-ltd · reddit · 2026-10-25
The author frames a key ethical question about AI. On one hand, LLMs combined with chatbots and social media could build intimate personal profiles, tuning "the algorithm" to manipulate individuals and standardize people into compliance with controllers' systems. On the other hand, LLMs may eliminate the need for one-size-fits-all large-scale systems: instead of forcing users to adapt, AI could in principle create bespoke, individually customized systems. Both paths are possible, and the author sees this tension as one of the most important moral challenges of widespread AI adoption.
