TechCrunch launched a running list, the "AI Graveyard," tracking AI products and startups that shut down, pivoted, or missed expectations.
- OpenAI dominates: the ChatGPT Atlas browser lasted under a year before August 9 shutdown; the Sora video app closed in March 2026 on high costs and weak retention; the super-app redesign was rolled back in July; Operator was folded into ChatGPT; DALL-E was sidelined.
- Startups: Relay, a five-year-old automation startup, closed as OpenAI and Google built similar features in-house; Notion Mail shuts down September 22 as users adopt standalone AI email agents; Huxe (ex-NotebookLM) closed in May; model-comparison playground Yupp closed in March.
- Also listed: Character.ai's bankruptcy, Apple's $250M Siri settlement, Microsoft's year-long Recall delay, Humane AI Pin's shutdown (assets to HP for $116M), and Rabbit R1's underperformance.
- Big picture: per S&P Global, 42% of corporate AI initiatives are ultimately abandoned.
