First framework detects counter-stories challenging racial stereotypes across 25K Reddit posts

This EMNLP paper studies counter-storytelling—people challenging dominant racial stereotypes via lived experiences, witnessed events, exemplars, and hypotheticals—a mechanism largely overlooked in computational social science.
The authors introduce the first framework for detecting and characterizing counter-stories at scale: (1) a three-dimensional taxonomy grounded in narratology and Critical Race Theory, and (2) a multi-stage pipeline identifying relational stereotype–counter-story pairs in noisy Reddit discourse. Using it, they annotate 25,549 posts across 615 communities, identifying 1,312 counter-stories. Analysis shows speaker identity and context shape the form: in-group writers favor first-person testimony, often as self-reflective insiders.
