HKUST & Huawei's BalanceRoute tackles load balancing in MoE LLM serving
jiqizhixin · x · 2026-10-25
In MoE serving (DeepSeek et al.), multiple compute groups decode in lockstep: the busiest group sets the pace while lighter groups sit idle, and per-group compute load varies even with equal request counts — so adding GPUs yields diminishing returns.
HKUST's Zijie Zhou team and Huawei 2012 Labs Theory Division present BalanceRoute (NeurIPS 2026, ArXiv 2605.06113): it formalizes synchronous waiting in distributed decoding, then turns short-term load prediction into online routing decisions to rebalance data-parallel serving.
