Testing 8 AI phone agent tools: two-thirds of front desks hang up within 5 seconds

The author ran three rounds of tests on AI agent phone calls across PlaceCall, ClawCall, Ring-a-Ding, AgentPhone, CALL-E, Vapi, Retell, Bland, Google's built-in caller, and a DIY Twilio setup, citing Voygr's dataset of 1,000+ calls to San Francisco businesses.
Key findings
- Use-case boundaries: every worthwhile tool's terms ban calling private individuals, telemarketing, debt collection, and sales pitches. The right scenario is errands you'd otherwise spend an afternoon on—checking pharmacy stock, quoting lead times across ten machine shops, booking restaurants without OpenTable. If Google already offers its free "Let Google call" button for a business, use that instead; agent tools earn their keep when you need precise questions, 5–15 calls to find a yes, and structured results fed back into your workflow.
- Disclosure cost: the honest baseline (only call businesses, state it's an AI on a recorded line, never sell) is expensive—roughly two-thirds of businesses hung up within five seconds of the automated intro, as receptionists reflexively hang up on robocalls. Of those who stayed past second five and heard a normal customer question, 85% helped.
- Wildly different implementations: on Vapi/Retell/Bland/DIY Twilio the disclosure is whatever you type into your firstMessage prompt (the author's Round 1 Retell setup failed to disclose because it was forgotten). Round 3 surfaced a trap: when a phone tree answers first ("press 2 for appointments"), your agent's firstMessage timing gets disrupted.
A full comparison spreadsheet is linked; this is the most systematic comparison to date of disclosure and anti-hallucination guardrails in consumer AI phone agents.
