Dev compares Codex vs Claude: one needs constant steering, the other gets intent
menhguin · x · 2026-10-25
Developer @menhguin shared a long-term hands-on comparison of two coding assistants:
- Codex: great at mechanical work and clearly capable of solving novel problems, but requires constant steering and heavy mental effort to direct; with a precise goal, it can tackle complex problems
- Claude: delivers fewer, less flashy results, but grasps intent and fills in the gaps; it handles the "stupid problems" without extra mental energy, so he actually ships more with it
He concludes with a hot take: replacing human workers isn't about solving smart problems — it's about handling trivial ones — and Anthropic is the only lab that could fully remove humans from the loop, yet has no intention of doing so.
