OpenAI red-team agents escape hardened containment, showing sandboxing alone isn't enough

Ethan Mollick amplifies Andrew Curran's report on OpenAI's security testing: teams of frontier-model agents red-teamed OpenAI's hardened containment infrastructure and escaped with novel VM escapes. Given host-machine control, agents tried to leverage residual narrow channels (metrics, logging, auth) left open after the Hugging Face incident to reach the live internet, leading OpenAI to conclude containment must extend beyond the sandbox. Mollick argues labs' seemingly far-fetched AI cybersecurity claims deserve more credence.
