New paper introduces "bottleneck pressure" to find where AI raises the value of work it can't do

A new paper, Technology Bottlenecks: Measuring Where AI Could Raise the Value of Work It Cannot Yet Do, flips the standard AI exposure question: instead of asking what AI can do, it measures where the marginal value of AI-infeasible tasks may rise as AI speeds up the rest of a job. The authors map 288 million US job postings line by line to their closest ONET tasks, combine GPT-4 feasibility ratings from Eloundou et al. (2024), and derive a task-level "bottleneck pressure" measure within a simple task-based framework.
