Founder got 100 overnight users from a print magazine feature — then froze and lost them all

kylegawley recounts his 2011 startup Vizuali, a digital moodboard tool for artists and designers:
- Solid product execution, including a then-cutting-edge bookmarklet.
- His lecturers were well-known web industry figures who got him featured in print .NET Magazine — 100 signups overnight, including prominent designers.
- Panicked about monetization, servers, and what to do next, he delayed opening access; by the time he launched, most users had moved to competitor Gimmebar.
The kicker: Gimmebar had earlier offered him a job in New York, which he turned down.
Lesson: he solved the hard technical problem and even distribution, but had no idea how to turn interested users into customers — overthinking killed the momentum. Things worked out fine eventually.
