Directionally Local launches private coding-agent infra that runs on edge hardware you own

New Singapore startup Directionally Local (founded by former X engineer Sana Sanm) argues serious software people should build their own hardware, targeting coding agents on edge devices.
- Stack: Autopilot (the agent) + Hotcell (sandbox via Apple VZ / Firecracker microVMs), with a local model and runtime coming next — the whole stack fits on one small box, keeping code and keys on-device.
- Hardware roadmap: works today on Mac minis and 128GB mini PCs (the latter can hold a 120B open model for fully offline agent runs); a proprietary box with its own chip/OS/inference is teased.
- Rationale: agents run for hours and thousands of steps, valuing steady throughput over latency; local-first routing sends routine steps to the box's model and hard ones to frontier models.
- Packages claim 46,000+ npm installs; Autopilot supports 25+ model providers including Ollama and LM Studio.
