Thread dissects Hinton's AI risk claims: a Nobel Prize is not a license to prophesy
AlexTensor · x · 2026-10-24
AlexTensor published a thread dissecting Hinton's AI risk arguments, arguing three distinct claims must be evaluated separately: ML amplifies real social harms (bias, disinformation); corporations deploy systems irresponsibly; and machines will become conscious superintelligences that destroy humanity. The first two are observable and deserve institutional responses, but neither establishes the third. The superintelligence claim needs its own mechanism, evidence, and falsifiable predictions. 'Prestige is not proof — a Nobel Prize is not a license to prophesy.'
