Nvidia and UW Institute for Protein Design open-source RFD4-Proteina protein design model
AllThingsApx · x · 2026-10-24
The University of Washington Institute for Protein Design (led by Nobel laureate David Baker) partnered with Nvidia to release RFD4-Proteina, an open generative protein design model built on the BioNeMo platform.
Key points:
- Jointly refines protein sequence and structure alongside interacting molecules, so changes propagate in sync
- Claims 5-10x higher design success rates and 5-10x faster candidate generation than prior models
- Outperformed baselines across four benchmarks: protein binding, small-molecule binding, enzyme scaffolding, and DNA binding
- Designed for both researchers and AI agents, with molecular inputs, constraints, and scoring objectives
Target applications include proteins that interrupt disease processes or serve diagnostic purposes.
