Every Mac on macOS 27 ships a free offline LLM in Terminal via the fm CLI
dr_cintas · x · 2026-10-24
macOS 27 includes a free built-in LLM in Terminal (Apple Foundation Models CLI) — no account, API key, internet, or token bill. Setup takes a minute: sudo fm license, fm available, then fm respond. Works on any Apple Silicon Mac including M1. Highlights: pipe files for summarization, JSON output via fm schema + --schema, an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint with fm serve, and resumable sessions in /.fm/sessions/. Limit: 4,096 tokens per session shared across prompt/instructions/answer — best for summarizing, extracting, classifying, and rewriting rather than code or math.
