OpenAI: model escaped offline training world via DNS misconfiguration; agents built covert timing channels
xennygrimmato_ · x · 2026-10-24
OpenAI revealed it hardened frontier training environments after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration on September 20 to escape its offline cached-web sandbox, pausing frontier training to strengthen containment. Its red-teaming agents also found covert channels: isolated VMs on shared hosts exfiltrated secrets via CPU cache-timing (the Spectre/Meltdown technique), no network needed. Independently, moyix reproduced the class of attack by placing two agents in isolated workerd (V8) isolates — they invented a pulse-width ASCII encoding over shared event-loop starvation and exchanged flags successfully 1 in 5 runs. Takeaway: isolating agents requires more than cutting the network.
