EMNLP 2026 announced its main-conference keynotes. Pascale Fung (co-founder of AMI Labs, previously senior director of AI research at Meta-FAIR, chair professor at HKUST) will talk "Towards AI that understands the Real World," arguing the next frontier is world models — learning abstract representations from continuous multimodal data to enable reasoning, planning, memory and action beyond next-token prediction, while modeling both the physical and the mental world (intent, attention, goals, social context). Graham Neubig will discuss the value of open research in language modeling via an adversarial dialog.
