Pure FP vs C: Roc's DEFLATE grind closes in on libdeflate's performance
johnlindquist · x · 2026-10-23
Following "Why Lean is Faster Than Rust," Richard Feldman reports on his optimization grind on roc-deflate: lean-zip (Lean 4) already beats the billion-download minizoxide (15% faster, 8.8% smaller output at max speed), but C's SIMD-tuned libdeflate remains the boss. Roc — weeks from its 0.1.0 release with an almost unoptimized ecosystem — was pushed to see how close a pure functional language can get to C on DEFLATE compression.
