Reddit debate: Are AGI goalposts quietly shifting toward ASI?
SameLotus · reddit · 2026-10-23
Reddit user SameLotus argues the community's AGI definition is shifting: more people now measure AGI by whether it can solve Millennium Problems or cure diseases—clearly ASI territory, since problems that take whole industries years aren't "general intelligence."
The author's take: AGI should mean "an average person"—generally capable and adaptable but ordinary. By that standard, current models are wildly spiky in capability, more like "an extremely sophisticated algorithm mimicking most human cognitive processes" than AGI. He suspects the goalpost shift started with the o1 release.
