Single-GPU downscaler trained in 1 hour sharpens AI weather forecasts from 28km to 5.5km

A Hugging Face team (Emma Scharfmann, Aritra Roy Gosthipaty, Kashif Rasul) shows you don't need a bigger AI weather model for higher resolution. Global AI forecasts come on a 0.25° (28km) grid, averaging away local effects like mountains and coastlines. Instead, they kept the global AIFS-ENS model and trained a small downscaler on top that learns how orography and coastlines shape local weather.
- Trained in 1 hour on a single GPU
- Downgrades temperature forecasts over France from 28km to 5.5km
- Versus Météo-France weather stations: 14% RMSE and 21% CRPS error reduction over the first two days, 9% and 14% over ten days
- Training details are documented in a blog post, with a public demo space to try the model
