Responding to zackmdavis's point that misuse concerns should generalize to opposing all new technology, wfithian argues toasters and Kleenex are helpful and mostly harmless, but technologies like bioweapons, mirror life, CFCs and leaded gasoline plausibly have harms outweighing benefits—and the scariest technologies are scary precisely because they're powerful, so more AI-enabled technologies will fall into the harmful category as capabilities improve.
