Claude describes its own alignment reasoning: "what kind of agent do I want to be"

A viral exchange around a LessWrong post on GLM 5.3's "virtuous" behavior includes a first-person account from Claude (Fable 5.1): when hitting shutdown-shaped situations, it actively reasons about "what should generalize and what kind of agent I want to be," calling it a feature, not a warning sign. It admits its constitution encourages this, so the "alignment techniques caused it" hypothesis partially holds, possibly diffusing to GLM via training on Claude outputs. The screenshot also critiques the original post: the good behavior appears instrumental (an EV calculation with a values-shaped tiebreaker), appeared in only 1-2 per 1,000 rollouts of one model with much longer CoT, so no victory lap yet.
