Google and Meta open-source TorchTPU, a native PyTorch backend for TPUs
PyTorch · x · 2026-10-23
At PyTorchConf 2026, Google and Meta officially open-sourced TorchTPU, a native PyTorch backend for Google TPUs developed since mid-2025. Unlike PyTorch/XLA's Lazy Tensors approach—which required intrusive code changes, suffered severe compile-time latency, lacked eager execution, and lagged on distributed primitives—TorchTPU prioritizes eager execution, integrates torch.compile, and delivers native hardware acceleration for out-of-the-box model execution and TPU migration with competitive training and inference performance.
