Robotics data is far from saturated: labs are hedge funds hunting for data alpha
paigeinsf · x · 2026-10-23
Pushing back on the claim that robotics data is saturated, the author frames frontier labs as the buy side—hedge funds deploying compute, keeping strategies private, hunting alpha in training. Data companies are alternative data providers, evals are sell-side research, and RL environments are structured products targeting specific capabilities. Selling the same data to everyone is precisely what buyers don't want: shared data means shared models and no alpha, just as hedge funds diversify data sources to protect their edge. Funds already trade satellite images of oil tanks and county fair pig prices; robotics hasn't even started that level of specialization, let alone built a verticalized data and eval market.
