How to evaluate robotics data startups: quality annotation and real-world evals win
paigeinsf · x · 2026-10-23
Answering "how should data startups be evaluated in the long term," @mrsunglow lays out three criteria for robotics data:
- Collection: ability to gather high-diversity, longer-horizon, skilled-labor environment data, whether via ego, UMI, or teleop.
- Annotation: need both mm-grade objective precision (vision/tactile tracking) AND fine-grained semantic understanding at the subtask level. Those doing both well will beat volume players whose quality "will get better over time" — frontier labs already sense who has superior quality; quality is king.
- Evals: high taste with diverse form factors (tabletop YAM arms are just the beginning); teams that get into private real-world deployment evals will outcompete those relying on crowdsourced arena-style evals.
