Canva has released Craft, its first in-house frontier image model built specifically for design. It uses a two-stage approach: plan composition, layout and text placement first, then render the image.
- Debuted 4th on the DesignArena leaderboard with an Elo score of 1340
- Canva reports 1st of 87 models for people/portraits and 1st of 85 for landscapes
- Live in Dream Lab now and available via Canva's public API
The author sees "plan before render" as the right direction, noting text rendering remains a weak spot for most image models, and suggests stress-testing it with a poster containing a real headline and small print.
