A new working paper by wfithian with 25 interdisciplinary coauthors, "The Feasibility of a Hardwired Pause of Frontier AI Training", argues that because the AI chip supply chain is highly concentrated with several chokepoints, controlling chip production could be a feasible lever to pause frontier AI training. It examines whether such a pause could be coordinated globally and how long it could last, citing a WSJ poll where 63% of voters want to pause AI development.
