Google illegally felled 250,000 trees in Finland for a datacentre, ordered to halt work

Per The Guardian, Google illegally stripped 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near Muhos, rural Finland — an estimated 250,000 trees, even the topsoil — to build a datacentre, with runoff flowing into a stream feeding the Oulujoki River. Finland's Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) ordered work halted at Muhos and a second site 100km away in Otanmäki.
- Finland, with 145 new datacentres in planning, is at the forefront of tech's latest buildout thanks to stability, land and a cool climate
- Locals call it "pure arrogance"
- Commenters note it's a gift to European opponents of datacentres and compute sovereignty
