FrontierCS 2 launches with Kaggle and DeepMind: AI agents must beat 48 published CS papers
MeganRisdal · x · 2026-10-23
FrontierCS 2, billed as the most frontier benchmark for AI agents in CS R&D, launches in partnership with Kaggle and Google DeepMind.
The design is notably rigorous:
- 48 tasks built from published papers across 13 CS research areas, each refined with domain experts
- Key contributions are stripped from the original repositories; agents must develop better solutions without access to the papers or the web
- Final implementations are evaluated against the original human contributions on hidden workloads — passing requires beating the reference on every checked metric
A forwarder working on open-source AI inference infrastructure praises the evaluation philosophy: producing plausible code is easy to demo, but an optimization that actually improves performance, preserves correctness, and generalizes beyond development workloads is the real bar.
