DeepMind turns black-box AI text detectors auditable with SAEs — and they beat the originals
dair_ai · x · 2026-10-23
A Google DeepMind + UPenn paper (EMNLP 2026) converts fine-tuned AI-text detectors into interpretable ones: sparse autoencoders are trained on the detector's residual stream, features are auto-labeled and filtered by a fidelity check, and a lightweight classifier is trained on the kept features alone. These features correspond to specific linguistic markers of AI text, and the interpretable classifier outperforms both the original neural detector and stylometric baselines on out-of-distribution text. Code and models are released.
