Europe cannot rent its way to AI sovereignty, Air Street Capital argues
nathanbenaich · x · 2026-10-22
Nathan Benaich of Air Street Capital, citing the State of AI 2026 report, argues Washington can control frontier model access without owning the labs: June's US export controls halted Fable and Mythos for foreign users (Fable returned in July), and Politico reported a White House request to review new OpenAI/Anthropic models before UK testers got them — while the UK AI Security Institute had tested GPT-6 Astra pre-release.
Core argument: a domestic data center does not give you control over the models inside it. Credible AI sovereignty requires sustained investment in researchers, compute, energy, and successive model generations. He asks which essential European work could survive a cutoff.
