Stanford opens its robot autonomy course materials: free PoRA textbook and lectures for everyone
drmapavone · x · 2026-10-22
Stanford instructors have released years of robot autonomy teaching materials to the public for free, centered on the textbook Principles of Robot Autonomy (PoRA), based on the course series taught since 2017.
The core thesis: building capable autonomous systems requires understanding how perception, state estimation, planning, control, and learning work together in a complete autonomy stack—not just individual algorithms. PoRA unifies classical robotics and modern AI in one framework, grounded in both theory and hands-on practice. The package also includes video lectures and hardware exercises, aimed at developers, researchers, and hobbyists worldwide.
