Carbon-X: an open 14B DNA+text model claimed to match GPT-6.1 Sol at 1000x lower cost
ATinyGreenCell · x · 2026-10-22
Researcher Loubna Ben Allal introduced Carbon-X, billed as the best open DNA model: a 14B LM midtrained on DNA and text, claimed to beat all open language models and match GPT-6.1 Sol at 1,000x lower cost. It can answer questions about sequences and mutations or generate new DNA. In follow-up Q&A she clarified the model works on raw genomic sequences — midtraining data covers mostly functional regions (coding sequences, regulatory elements, motifs) from eukaryotes — and mutation detection works by spotting bases that break conserved contextual patterns, though exact editing, cloning and assembly planning are best paired with deterministic tools or larger models.
